What is Functional Patterns

A revolutionary approach to training the human body, developed by Naudi Aguilar in 2006. Functional Patterns looks at human movement through an evolutionary lens and focuses on rebuilding the movement patterns that are fundamental to being human: standing, walking, running and throwing.

Rather than treating the body as a collection of isolated muscles, FP looks at how the body works as an interconnected system and how movement is coordinated through the entire body. The goal is to develop movement that is more efficient, coordinated, and adaptable to the demands of everyday life.

This is the foundation of Functional Patterns: training the human body according to the way it is built to move.

How I came to it

I’ve lived with scoliosis since I was 12 and, over the years, tried many different approaches, including yoga, Pilates, Schroth, massage, and acupuncture. Nothing had lasting results. I felt like I was managing the symptoms rather than addressing how my body was moving.

When I started working with a Functional Patterns practitioner, I noticed a significant reduction in my pain within the first week. What stood out to me was that FP didn’t train me around my diagnosis. It trained me as a human first. It looked at how my entire body was moving and functioning rather than defining my capabilities by my scoliosis.

Seeing the results for myself and experiencing such a different approach led me to pursue my Functional Patterns certification in 2023.
